Or at least he asked if he should.

But the majority of folks on the discussion thought he should use the controversial title, he hadn’t yet mentioned, EVEN if it was just for the purpose of LINK BAIT. After all, a little link bait and some controversial headers and titles always work – right. I mean. I used Joel Comm writes controversy here as link bait. You really think there won’t be some folks click this link just because his name is in the title?

But, really, this is Joel Comm…

Here’s the reality (read “infringement” hype)… I don’t normally get out of bed for less than a million dollars, but then I realized that I have been too rigid in my thinking. All this time, I’ve been investing in improving the quality instead of using the metaphorical whack-a-mole mallet to pound the marketing message home and just make some money. Joel makes money just by exhaling when he relaxes, so why shouldn’t the rest of the world capture some of that controversial cash.

What a sucker I was!

Thank goodness someone out there finally had the courage to tell the honest truth about making your first million online! Controversy – THAT’S IT!

I’d been doing it all wrong!

Seriously, I’ve spent tens of thousands of dollars buying all the detailed graphics, hundreds of thousands editing to get all the publications perfect, when all I needed to do was just put the simplest cover on naturally written books, and let the impact of the market SELL my content.

Oh, stupid, stupid me!

All this time I have been working hard to polish manuscripts, enlisting the help of professionals where necessary when all I needed to do was hammer out some words, run it through spell check and accept all changes, then slap a cover on it using Microsoft Paint! And the marketing! Years of painstaking research, networking, learning proper internet etiquette… wasted when all I needed to do was SPAM the hell out of everyone every two minutes.

Revealing the secrets other million billionaires have kept hidden from the public I am on my way to fame and riches now!

Controversy SELLS.

After all – you have to admit – Shades of Gray is definitely controversial. It sells.

So that’s the slacker in all of us, we want to do things the easy way, because it’s… Well, easy.

A few days back, my son came down the stairs with a perplexed look on his face. He said, “Mom, I’ve got a project I want to do, and I don’t know how to start. Can you help me get it started?”

I really waited for him to finish and he didn’t. So I asked, “What is it you want to start?”

He sat there on the stairs looking at me for like ten minutes before he answered.

“I want to publish some of those short things I’ve written on Kindle. Not as real printed books, but just on Kindle. Just – the satire – kind of stuff. You know, fast, easy reads people can download for 99 cents and off they go. Read it in thirty minutes and go have some fun later. I wonder if they’d sell.”

So, we talked about the process and what happens when you post satire… Do people ever again take you seriously?

Last Saturday morning I started the process of preparing for the 10K that is coming up. I’ve never run a 10K and I’m overweight. I’m middle aged (if I live to be a hundred and six) and right now, I can’t even run thirty steps, let alone a 10K. In fact, walking 30 steps leaves me breathless after working my way back from sitting on my bum with an injured leg for almost six months. But I really do plan to run the 10K, or at least walk it. That means Working my WAY up to walking those 30 steps.

I started out by going up and down the stairs to do laundry, myself.

Every time I start to take a step outside the house it snows or rains, making the trail muddy and slick, which scares the crap out of me. I don’t want to re-injure my ankle. So, I’m running the stairs, exercising my legs, doing squats, and running the stairs more and more often. Up to 12 times a day, this morning, so far (and it isn’t even noon).

When I told my son I wanted to run the 10K he laughed at me. He’s still laughing.

So, I pointed out that writing books, satire, and then expecting to sell real books is kind of the same thing. Satire is the sitting on your bum doing nothing for six months and then writing a real book is like the 10K.

Controversy is like the rain and snow on the trail. 

These incredibly treacherous conditions may seem simple to overcome for some who don’t want to run a serious race, if they’re used to the slick, muddy trail. But for me, to a real writer who has worked hard to establish a name for herself in the writing industry, putting out satire, with no real purpose or quality is a dangerous fall on the rocky surface, just waiting to happen.

Add to that the inconsistency of instability, the ankle problem and you’ve got a blister on your heal, no books selling and … well, you get the idea, right?

I never quit. I keep running, even when the race is a little longer than I really want to run, I just keep going. That’s when I reached through to him and touched his sense of propriety. He realized that quality is the long haul.

We will finish the book.

I never quit. We will finish. We will finish with integrity. The race, and the book. The real book, not the satire.

That’s the point where my son did something I will never forget.

He said, “Mom, we’re going to finish the program, put it together right and provide the readers with the quality they’re expecting, because that’s who we are.”

Joel Comm’s book Twitter Power is non-controversial. It gives you straight up, the wet soggy creek crossings, the long patches of trail soaked with mud, the slick-willy version of what happens when you don’t do business straight up, and he simply tells it like it is. The straight of it. He NEVER strays from the factual basis of marketing on twitter.

His book is a hot spot of information every marketer needs to know about how to market their inf0-products on twitter and make an impression on serious readers. He tells the truth.

Controversially? Perhaps, but never without the filament of truth that strengthens his efforts and fills up his readers. They walk away satisfied with the meat he provided. That’s just how Joel rolls.

Working on the book, telling my readers straight up what they have to do to make their first million online, and giving them the steps required to do that is important to the process. They want to know the REAL deal, not the controversial satire that might be fun to write and might teach tid-bits and morsels. My readers are women in mid-life, who have been through the satire. They lived it. They know it doesn’t work and that being catty and sarcastic doesn’t really get you anywhere. They want real truth, spoken in ways they can take to the bank.

Controversy is for Shades of Gray.

Stick to the truth Joel. You’ll keep moving ahead at lightening speed! And you WILL make your first million online. (Well, okay, you probably already have, but it’ll continue! Trust me. I’m telling the truth.)

Setting yourself up to earn a steady monthly income has to be a pre-requisite to your success online. There is no doubt that large sums of money can be made (and indeed are being made) from selling products or services online.

With over 300,000,000 internet users (and that figure is already obsolete even as I write this) the potential for long term wealth is very high indeed.

This fantastic new medium has brought untold possibilities for the small trader operating in a niche market. In fact the internet is made for just that type of marketer. It therefore goes without saying that anyone with the desire, knowledge or ability to market just about any kind of product or service online is a potential millionaire in the making!

You are probably already aware of the importance of having a website to use as a focal point for any products or services you are selling.

But do you know the golden rule you should always keep in mind when building your site and making it ready to welcome all those potential buyers? This rule is – keep it simple!

When I started out with my first web site I broke this rule of simplicity by filling every inch of my Home Page with all manner of graphics and fonts. This slowed down the loading time. There were also a number of links to other web sites that took my visitors away from my site – and almost certainly they never came back.

It took me a whole eighteen months to realise that what I was doing was never going to work. When I now look at the websites I was promoting a year and a half ago I cringe. What possessed me to put so much effort into them! Because I really did work hard at putting them together.

Take a good look at your own site. Pay very close attention to the following points:

* page design – navigation should be easy

* HTML – use of keywords in title and description meta tags

* use of graphics – minimum number should be used relevant to the theme of the site

* use of text/fonts – black text on a white background works best

* hyperlinks – use the “target_blank” tag to ensure external pages open in a new window

* reason for existence – is the purpose of the site clear?

Believe me, when it comes to setting up a website that SELLS, you do not need stunning graphics, dynamic HTML or Java Script. These things could spell the end of your business! Especially when it comes to getting ranked on the major Search Engines. (Don’t ignore these, they could be responsible for up to 80% of traffic to your site!)

So, here is a summary of how your Home Page should be made up:

* a maximum of 2 graphics and these must be central to the theme of the site

* about 800 words of text, including a list of benefits and a good description of what you offer

* a clear navigation bar

* a colour scheme that is consistent but not “glaring”

* any links to external sites should open in a new window

* try to avoid placing a graphic at the top of the page

* use Meta Tags that include one or two keywords in the title, three or four in the description and about six or seven in the keyword part

* try to keep the page under 20 kbs – 10 would be ideal

And all other pages should follow the same basic design. Keep these points in mind and you will be well on the way to creating a fast loading page that will be pleasing on the eye and will also be acceptable to the major Search Engines. And when it comes to submitting your site – do this only once, (though not submitting at all may even be the better option) then just update your pages on a regular basis. This is definitely better than continually submitting your site.

A Social Media Rant – Read At Your Own Risk (You Have Been Warned)

Warning: if you read on, you are about to experience a rant. Instructive in places I hope, yet still a rant.

• Recently my wife Maritza and I were at Hartsfield International Airport in Atlanta, the busiest airport in the world. We walked up to wait on the tram that would take us to our gate for our flight. About 20 people were waiting around to board on our section. 18 of the 20 were looking down at their cell phones, checking email, texts, tweets and God only knows what else. My thought, which became my out loud words, was “Does anyone ever look up and see the world around them anymore?” I think someone could walk stark naked through most groups of people and no one would notice (unless it became a YouTube video.)

• Did you know that one in six cell phone users between the ages of 22 – 36 have their cell phones paid for by their mom?

• A recent Facebook update by a long time friend bemoaned the fact that he had actually (those faint of heart, brace yourself…perhaps you shouldn’t even read on) yes, he actually left the house twice last week without his cell phone. I warned you this would be tough information to swallow. There was a time, not too long ago, when all of us did just that everyday. How did we survive?

• In the book “The Winter of Our Disconnect” author and mom Susan Maushart had her entire family go a full six months without any screen time. Good on her. Could you do that? Could I?

• My cell phone allows someone’s voice to come in loud and clear. It also has a very sensitive volume control that allows me to turn up the volume and turn down the volume of someone’s voice. So I assume everyone else has this feature too. Though sometimes I think I must be mistaken, because I notice so many people in public feel the need to practically yell into their phones. Or maybe they actually believe that every one within 50 feet of them are hanging on every one of their words.

• I’m as guilty as everyone else, so I’m pointing at myself here too. In fact, right now I have immediate access to 3 screens: the laptop on which I am writing this column, the TV on in the background, and my cell phone next to me…

Is there any hope for us at all?

That is not by accident. Just as it is not by accident that you are reading this article.

Blog Post Tip #2 – Have Fun With It and Make It Fun – Blog about things that you care about and with which you can have some fun. The more fun you have with your blog post the more fun your reader will have.

Consider the teachers in school or later speakers who you really like to listen to. Don’t they have the ability to make almost any subject fun

Why not do the same exact thing with your blogging? The extra benefit here is that not only is it more fun, your make more money this way too.

Blog Post Tip #3 – Ask for an Action – Don’t just leave your reader hanging, ask them to do something. Of course this can be a call to action for an offer, nothing wrong with that all. And there is so much more you can do. Instead of just asking them to comment (ZZZZ) ask them to take the next success step and download something that will help them achieve their goals. Ask a question and invite their answers.

OK, that’s a crap joke, but the best one you’re going to get out of me this Monday morning, that I can promise.

But, seriously… denial is a big problem for all of us, not just business owners.

Why?

Because the tendency for us to reject evidence contradicting what we’ve already made up our minds to believe, is hard-wired in us.

Denial is why we throw good money after bad supporting our actions with the emotional crutch that “I’ve invested so much in following this path, if I quit now I’ll have wasted it all”.

Fact is, whatever’s done is done; money spent is money spent. The only sane and rational way to view any situation is to take stock of where you are now and decide if any action you pursue from here is likely to be profitable or not.

There’s a big difference between giving up and knowing when to quit.

Denial is why people still cling on to the idea the Earth is just 6,000 years old even though to explain the facts of how the world is made up in those terms requires all sorts of amazing mental gymnastics. I could say more, but there’s no point. It’s like trying to teach my dog calculus, only there’s a greater chance my dog will actually understand it.

And denial is why we keep chasing customers in the same old way even though it’s never worked before and somehow assume it’s suddenly going to start working now.

I’ve seen clients do this. I’ve seen them repeatedly make the same mistakes, over and over again because to do something different is so scary and so frightening it hurts to the point of making them feel physically ill. No kidding.

What’s the answer?

Well, it’s not for everyone, but peer review can help enormously.

See not one of us can truly escape our human nature. Even the greatest and most objective scientists are prone to confirmation bias and the all-too-human desire to protect their ego.

You’ve probably been caught up in the social media dance routines a time or two by now, wondering how you make money doing something that is so addictive it sucks away your time online. The reality is, there are many ways to work social media without losing track of time.

Let’s sort out a few basic concepts and see if we can’t bake those hours into less time.

First, no matter what else you learn about the social medias, realize that if you’re not making relationships on those social medias  you’re wasting your time there.

Timers

Setting a timer for 60 seconds and allowing yourself to review for that long and post, before you go back to work on your regular online job, makes sense. Do it. Get a timer and set it each time you get on your social media sites. Don’t fudge and don’t reset it.

Limits

Limit the number of times you’re on the site to 3 – 5 times a day. Post, visit a few other sites and move on. You don’t have to read EVERYTHING on the page three times each.

Scheduled BUILD Time

Previous items relate to posting allowances. There’s such a thing as needing to catch up with your friends. The minute they think you’re just posting at them, you’ll be labeled a spammer and it won’t matter what kind of relationship you’ve developed, you’re DONE. You’re TOAST. You won’t be on their friends list for long. Take time, make time, and allow yourself scheduled BUILD time on each of the social medias each week. A few minutes may be enough, or you may need more time, depending on how much you count on Social Media for your overall income.

Build a Fan Page

Be sure you connect in various ways that relate to what you’re looking for online. If the only people you connect with online are old friends from high school, you’re probably NOT going to make a lot of serious cash. But then, growing a fan base, means building a fan page that supports your business and invites professional interaction from your business connections.

You may think you can handle the social media precepts of your business, and there’s a good chance you can handle it. But there’s an even better chance that you’ll need assistance, either in managing your social postings or in managing what happens after you post. Using the V word in a room full of teenaged boys is likely to get you assaulted, even on a good day. But, I’m daring enough to endanger myself on the Internet when linked with WEALTH. The average marketing mogul online is less than 25 years of age and an essential virgin in the business world. He or she may have been in the courts before, but most likely their prior business interests have been as an employee or wage earner. Unless of course, they dropped into luck on the internet, right off the daddy-allowance gravy train, in which case, they’ve most likely never had a real job before.

What does that mean for today’s Internet Business leaders?

It means they’re likely more interested in finding their way through the virgin wealth available on the internet than working their way through the girls in bikini’s on the beaches of the world. Geeky guys with nothing to lose but their virginity aren’t so likely to be pulled away from a multi-million dollar opportunity when dollar signs are clanging their way through the system to their PayPal accounts as their fingers crunch the keys. They not only can tell you how it’s done, but they can tell you, because they’ve done it.

Much like Ziglar’s claim to making his Red Head happy kept him motivated, these young wealth seekers have realized that their skills are best marketed online, with well branded information. No languishing on the beaches with their data hanging out, these geeks often work long hard shifts to make their business happen, not only building the business but standing in the gap for their buddies who are building a business too. Nothing short of absolute success is good enough.

There’s so much to do…

Developing virgin wealth means being strong enough to stand in the realm of reality with your data hanging out, without giving away the farm when a hungry sucker comes by for a gallon of milk. I can still here Granddad saying, “don’t give away the milk if you want to sell the cow!” In today’s market there are all too many “buyers” hunkering down to wait you out and suck the life out of your marketing opportunity by hosing you for time, phone call after phone call. Are you too nice to say no?

After talking to several new buyers of my wealth programs on the phone, I began to recognize look-a-like copies on the internet, when nobody had really bought anything. Then it dawned on me, that sweet lady with the accent wasn’t a lady at all, she was stealing my virgins. Worse, she was stealing my milk and killing my cash cow.  I needed the income she was taking by stealing what I offered at little or no fee. And, as I said, worse, she was killing my cow.

That’s when I learned why the geeks under twenty-five were invisible online except where they were selling merchandise.  I suddenly wanted to be invisible too. Not happening, my google analytic friends admonished. I was far too visible to become invisible at this stage. Name recognition, brand recognition and brand identity was way too common in my line of work and I had way too much to lose. So, what’s a girl to do?

Change the name…

That was the simple solution that came up immediately. I changed my name and became a shadow of my prior self, showing up in dark corners and allowing the name recognition factor to die down so the celebrity status could be toned down to MELLOW. My name became nothing over night. By morning, the name people searched to find me would be a needless offer.

Instead, they’d be finding methods for building virgin wealth, making a million online and learning how to market their business and their own brand identification on the Internet. Instead, they’d find an average marketing mogul with a piece of the missing pie available in the middle of Internet town, and a ten year old thriving business pushing SEO and Virgin Wealth in a local bank.
